Text by Jim Lawrance
The Colorado Plateau is a land rich in red sands, chocolate crags, eternally translucent skies, and stunning canyons. The region inscribes the deserts, mountains, rivers, and high mesas of the four corners of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. These magical landscapes inspired the Ancient Puebloans and other original peoples of the Southwest, and serve as a powerful context for the intriguing petroglyphs and ruins they left behind. David Muench has walked this land- the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Bryce Canyon National Park, Mesa Verde, Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument and has returned with the unforgettable images that are presented in this book. Along with Muench's photographs are excerpts from his photojournal, which reveal his personal responses to his subjects and the photographic techniques he uses to capture the phenomenal light of the Plateau. The essay for Plateau Light was written by James Lawrence, a colleague and friend of David Muench. Lawrence takes you with him as he journeys to rediscover the Colorado Plateau and is captivated by its eerie magic. His ability to interpret the distinctive relationship between photographer and the Southwest vistas that are his subject will allow you special insight into the spirit and drama of the Colorado Plateau.
